<image:title>Works in Wool - Elise Kyllo - Wool, the Full Experience - Theresa dyeing with indigo</image:title>
<image:caption>Theresa Hornstein, our natural dye instructor, took this fleece and led us through all the steps of dyeing the wool with a rainbow of colors. We gathered materials, like tansy and poplar leaves, and Theresa provided other natural materials for about 10 different colors. Pots boiled and insects simmered, then the wool was submerged and gently pulled out of the pot, and it transformed into brilliant shades of pink, green, yellow, blue, and grey. We added a little alum, a little iron or vinegar, and different shades of color magically emerged. We were so lucky to have Theresa on the team, as she is a science teacher, a fiber artist, and loves to share her deep wisdom about chemistry and the alchemy of natural dying.</image:caption>

<image:title>Works in Wool - Elise Kyllo - Wool, the Full Experience - Heidi, sheep, and students</image:title>
<image:caption>There are three instructors for this weekend: Heidi our shepherdess; Theresa, the natural dye and fiber teacher; and me, the organizer and felting teacher. Heidi Quist of Prairie Willow Farm, near Lindstrom, MN hauls a trailer full of farm animals to the Grand Marais harbor. Usually she brings two sheep for shearing, but this year we were lucky to have two sheep and six lambs. Sheep are traditionally sheared in late winter, so Heidi had to chose two sheep to shear for this spring class. Lucky for us, the two she choose both had triplets! They did a great job of mowing our grass and eating our dandelions on campus. We hand sheared the two mamas with hand clippers, each one producing about four pounds of wool. After we removed most of the lanolin and dirty, unuseable parts of the fleece through a hot water wash, our final wool weight was about five pounds of beautiful fleece for our projects.</image:caption>

<image:title>Works in Wool - Elise Kyllo - Wool, the Full Experience - Something to keep you warm</image:title>
<image:caption>Everyone participated in every part of the process, from the first step of skirting the fleece which is pulling off dags or poop dried parts of fleece, to teasing the wool, washing, dyeing, drying, hand carding and drum carding and finally felting our final projects. Much laughter and conversations about knitting, spinning, patterns, natural dyes, sheep raising etc filled the air while our hands busily worked together over the 3 ½ days together. After experiencing the whole process from the fleece to the finished fiber, one may never again complain about how expensive wool is. I feel so fortunate to be a part of this class. I get to spend the weekend with sheep and a group of people excited to learn about wool. I’m continually amazed by what wool can become and what students create. Combine hot water, soap, agitation (human energy) and a little creativity and the possibilities of wool are endless! Ohhh, did I mention, patience?!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Some of us go a step further and contemplate how to adopt them. Two lucky students in the class fell in love with the Finn lambs and purchased them for their growing flock. Since I live on a bedrock hillside and coyotes, fox, and wolves roam the woods, I dream of a village flock of fleece traveling about Grand Marais, mowing the lush lawns and roadsides of our town. Imagine, our gas guzzling, smelly lawn mowing engines would be replaced by a flock of migrant sheep. Suddenly all those lawns have a valuable purpose of feeding creatures and providing fiber and meat for our community. Ahhh, I think I was dreaming….counting sheep as they leapt over fences….and now back to the story of Wool, the Full Experience.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Karin also kindly offered a critique of my past work and gave me suggestions about how to progress. This was truly a gift and very helpful, as not everyone is willing to take time to offer constructive criticism. During Karin’s visit, I also learned a bit about teaching styles, as we have very different methods of teaching. In a nut shell, Karin teaches technique and I encourage creativity. I can’t tell you how many times, I have heard Grand Marais felters who were in one of her classes, comment about how difficult her classes were, but also how much they learned. Her voice of encouragement and reprimand is with us all as we continue to consider felting in the “way of Karin”. As I teach in the future, I would like to incorporate improved felting techniques, setting higher expectations for the students, while including the playfulness and joy of creativity and individual expression, when appropriate. You can see in the two photos of Karin’s class and my felting class, how different the outcomes were. Everyone in Karin’s class made a green hat of a certain shape. In my class, each student chose to create a different felted object using the appropriate felting skills needed. There isn’t a right or wrong way, but there is a balance of technique and creativity that I hope to find and share with my students.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Works in Wool - Elise Kyllo - Working Together - Great Intangibles</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the first signs of great intangibles around me, was the serendipitous visit of the amazing felter from Norway, Karin Flatoy Svarstad. Just two days after I completed teaching the new Textile Traditions class, Karin arrived. I was fortunate to be in two of her classes, as an assistant and a student, learning felting techniques from a master. As a mostly self-taught felter, my long time desire for personal felting instruction was reaffirmed by my experience of working with Karin. I began to realize that I didn’t know what I didn’t know and couldn’t see what I didn’t know without the help of someone who could show me. I felt so fortunate to have spent many days with Karin stretching my skills as a felter and setting new standards for felting which I could work towards. You’ll see in the photos that I was encouraged to work towards straight and even edges, consistency and strength of wool. At left: Potholders made in one of Karin’s classes - we spent much of a day just working on making stellar squares of the proper thickness, straight edges and corners.</image:caption>

<image:title>Works in Wool - Elise Kyllo - Working Together - Mittens in process</image:title>
<image:caption>One of my first solo projects after Karin left, was to replicate a series of mittens that were of consistent size and thickness, flexibility and strength. Looking at mittens I've made in the past, you'd see they are a bit chunky and uneven. Perhaps, due to laziness or an excuse for creative expression, I have been content with my wavering edges and wonky, handmade imperfections. Now, I can see the value of a tighter, higher standard and can begin to see how to accomplish this.</image:caption>

Finally I feel it is possible, with a newly installed sink, three new table tops and loads of shelving, the studio is a welcoming and inspiring place to work. After a long stretch of taking classes and filling my well with inspiration and new techniques, I am ready to dive into studio time and push myself towards creative work, begin producing products for the summer sales and consider what some of my larger felting goals are. Stay tuned.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Despite being full of stress during the planning phase, after the fact, I know it was worth it, and by the time six months pass, I will forget the challenges and feel the pleasure of its successful completion. As I approach the next months, I am looking forward to creating a working studio space and beginning the creative work of discovery and growth in my craft of felting. I am eager to connect with other fiber artists that may become mentors in my process. I will be applying for a couple of summer art fairs and have my fingers crossed I am awarded an art residency on Isle Royale. Already, I fear my ADP time may pass too quickly! But, perhaps that is just life in general. Enjoy these winter months of wearing your woolies…oh, wait, we never stop wearing our wool on the shores of Lake Superior! Wool, is always JUST RIGHT!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Felted Mural Project</image:title>
<image:caption>The Community Felted Mural Project This project began with three murals painted across the street from the burned out 3rd precinct in Minneapolis after George Floyds death. Sometimes, art is the only response in an impossibly painful situation. One year later, there are signs of positive change and people are gathering to make symbols of healing, dreaming and building as they transform wool into colorful hearts, birds and bees. These symbols made by people of all ages in Northern Minnesota and Minneapolis will be gathered and felted together into three wool murals that will hang in communities north and south.</image:caption>
